Typically, families come together at Thanksgiving and Christmas, creating meaningful memories that last a lifetime. Chances are there are family members who must quarantine this year to protect their health.

Seize the Opportunity

Let’s seize this opportunity to be creative and introduce new memories and traditions. Purposefully direct your energy on activities you can do. Embrace this challenging time with grace and thankfulness.

Start New Traditions

How can we create meaningful memories that become future traditions? In a previous blog, I shared six ways to beat the COVID Blues and enjoy the holidays. Here are seven more suggestions for making the most of the holiday season.

Come together

1) Bring families together grace, a toast or to share what they are thankful for. You can easily accomplish this at no cost with WhatsApp, Facetime, Zoom or Skype.

Get creative

2) Make a storybook for grandkids using photos of your times together or what you are doing now and what you want to do when they can visit. You could also do this digitally however, a hard copy can be viewed anytime, anywhere for years to come.

3) Turn an 8×10 photo into a fun puzzle. Glue it to a stiff board, vary the puzzle pieces’ size to fit their age, and pop it in the mail!

Give a forever memory

4) Write a letter or note to those you are close to but cannot see this holiday season. Specifically, tell these special people what you enjoy and appreciate them, why you miss being with them. Reflect on the joys of the past and present. Research tells us that grateful people experience better health and live longer.

Go Digital

5) Make a video of your holiday preparations and celebration. Ask them to do the same. Then, share your videos.

6) Send selfies of you and what you are doing. Ask them to do the same.

Get outdoors

7) Take a hike or a drive. Record several short segments (2-3 minutes) of things that would interest them. Send them short videos every few days.

Circumstances, situations, people or COVID can steal your joy only IF you allow it. Make a purposeful choice to see the bright side. Discover the joy in gratitude. You can find ways to create meaningful memories for you and your loved ones. It will lift your spirits and theirs too.
